Chad Travel Information

The security situation in Chad varies between different areas. In the areas northwest of N`Djemena, along the border with Nigeria and Lake Chad, there have been a number of attacks from Boko Haram in recent years. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued travel advice for the whole of Chad.

Safety

The security situation in Chad varies from region to region. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel advice, all trips to the Chad Sea area and all unnecessary trips to the rest of Chad are not recommended. Also note that all travel outside the capital N’Djamena requires permission from the Ministry of the Interior.

In the areas northwest of N’Djamena, along the border with Nigeria and Lake Chad, there have been a number of attacks from Boko Haram in recent years.

In the early summer of 2015, several bombings were made against police stations in N’Djamena. There are reasons to fear new terrorist attacks, primarily as a result of Chad’s role in the military fight against Boko Haram in Nigeria.

It is important that the individual keeps up to date on the security situation in the country and avoids areas where unrest is taking place. Norwegian citizens considering traveling to Chad are encouraged to keep up to date by keeping up with news and other sources of information.

Natural disasters: Parts of the road network can be difficult to reach during the rainy season, which in the south lasts from May to October. In central parts of the country, the rainy season lasts from June to September.

In the north of the country, frequent and partly severe sandstorms occur during the period May to September.

All visitors to Chad must register with the national police within 72 hours of arrival in the country.

Health

Vaccines: Travelers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with official health professional travel advice, guidance and overview of recommended vaccines at the Institute of Public Health.

There is a risk of malaria infection throughout the country, and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health recommends the use of mosquito bite prophylaxis and drug prophylaxis. As of 20 February 2020, no cases of persons infected with the coronavirus have been registered, but the body temperature control at the airport has been implemented.

Visitors must at all times carry a vaccination card with proof of yellow fever vaccine. This is strictly enforced. Chad lies in the meningococcal belt that extends from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east. Since the mid-1990s, the incidence of meningitis in this area has been very high. Vaccination against meningitis is therefore recommended. Contact the National Institute of Public Health or a travel clinic six to eight weeks before departure to find out what other vaccines are required.

Hospitals and medical services: Health services are very limited throughout the country.

National Holidays: Independence Day, August 11. In addition, the Muslim holiday Eid is celebrated twice a year.

The time difference to Norway is GMT + one hour summertime, GMT + two hours winter time.

The telephone network for both mobile and telephony is limited and sometimes overloaded. If you use a satellite telephone, it must be registered with the authorities. According to allcitycodes, Chad area code is +235.

The languages ​​in Chad are French (official), Arabic (official), sara (in the south), as well as a large number of local languages ​​and dialects.

Possession of any type of drug is strictly prohibited and severely punished.

Dress conservatively. On the street and other public places shoulders and knees should be covered.

Public authorities can issue photo permits to visitors. It is forbidden to photograph public buildings and military installations. Ask for permission before taking pictures of the locals.

Always carry travel documents, including valid passports and visas.
