If you are looking for a quiet place, with bucolic landscape and various trails and waterfalls, this place is called Aiuruoca. The mining town was founded in 1706 by bandeirantes that were looking for gold and precious stones. Thanks to the large amount of parrots that existed in the mountains of the region received the name of Aiuruoca, which in tupi means “the parrot“ (Aiuru = kite, oca = play, nest,House).
Surrounded by the Ecological Station of parrot, the area is rich with trails and waterfalls, and has an ideal environment for the practice of outdoor sports such as hiking, climbing, horseback riding, buoy–cross and off-road. The best time to visit is between December and March, when the waterfalls are more full and the water temperature cooler. Already winter is rigorous, with very low temperatures. The mountains in the area have an elevation that varies from the 2,293 980 meters. In addition to the Atlantic forest, visitors will find the landscape of the place beautiful forests of Araucaria.
A curiosity is that since 1950 the Carnival of Aiuruoca occurs a week before the rest of Brazil. Legend has it that at that time there was a German priest very drive that didn’t allowed to party on time. This Carnival out of season causes tourists from filling up the city. Reach Aiuruoca is not difficult. Who part of São Paulo has two alternatives: either the Fernão Dias Highway (BR–381), Belo Horizonte direction, until São Gonçalodo Sapucaí, where you take the BR–267, sense Aiuruoca; or take the Via Dutra (BR–116) until the exit of Cruzeiro, where should enter on MG–158 to Caxambu, famous health resort of southern Minas Gerais, which is 45 km from Aiuruoca. For those who come from Rio de Janeiro, the best option is to take the BR–116 (ViaDelhi) to the entrance of engineer Steps, after follow to Itamonte, Pouso Alto and finally Cachambu.

• There are several hostels, some of them are inside the Matutu environmental Reserve. For those who want to camp, there are options of camping areas and Wild camping is allowed.
