Direct descendant of the mountain bike, the city bike it reinterprets the principles of functionality, transportability and playful handling adapted to the urban environment. Read the guide to know the characteristics, types, and how to choose the best city bike based on criteria of quality, price, offers and correct information to the consumer.
An environment in which the city bike go replacing the old high-wheel bike devoted to traveling citizens, that in different cities and in many cities of our country (particularly in the North) represent more than just a means of transport a real institution. But what really distinguishes the city bikes from other models of bicycles? What are the common features discernible in all cycles of this kind among the many models on the market today?
The materials, the common elements and options
Whatever the material it is made of its chassis (which can be made of steel or aluminum, and the weight difference between the two solutions is not what one might believe: in principle it swings in all cases between 12 and 16 kg overall), a city bike is always equipped with headlights and reflectors provided by ebicyclelights, required by law, a luggage rack mounted above the rear wheel, for a change, usually 18 or 21 reports, an adjustable seat with a wider sitting pretty (and therefore more comfortable) than that of a mountain bike.
Fail, than any dirt bike model, suspension, instead of which are still space on a convenient city bike mudguards to protect the occupant from the sketches, especially on the part of the rear wheel, if wet or muddy. Often the fenders is accompanied by the carter, to protect from dirt. The handlebar is not straight like a mountain bike, but he shapes more arched and traditional, to follow the guide allowing the rider to keep your back straight.
One of the many design choices that, for city bike, betray a source linked above all to the comfort in the (much smaller) city journeys, rather than performance and the control needs are intimately connected to the sporty nature of a mountain bike. An element not found on all models on the market, even if provided as required by the highway code, is the bell, while another element of differentiation between the various city bike saddle and wheels are locking type. Element that, in the two types of models in which it declines, has its pros and its cons, as we shall see below.
The reports are the “speed” of a bike, and just like the gears of a car, their function is primarily to facilitate pushing vehicle at different inclinations of the path. The high gears let you basically push the bike downhill or more strongly, once a certain speed, on the plain, but by doing less. On the other hand, the low gear cover a climb with less effort, by applying to the pedaling less force but with a faster pace (more rides, more “reading”, per minute).
Almost all city bike mount a knob, as that of mountain biking: only very few models employ a return similar to that of race bike, adopting the system of levers on the sides of the handlebar. The shifter knob (an area in which the Japanese company Shimano holds a dominant position on a planetary level), which is much more practical, working through two knobs on each side of the handlebar, near the handle knobs, and made by the rider using your thumbs.
The left knob has three major marches, and the image on the right has 6 or 7: multiply the first number by the second you get the amount of reports (i.e the possible combinations of gears) whose bike is capable, 18 or 21. Since, as mentioned above, the vast majority of city bike takes changes produced by the same company, there are no appreciable differences in this regard in the various models on the market. A shrewd choice regarding the components and the arrangement of the chain, evidently mainly on economic models of the range offered by the market, determines in every way a working relationship which is more precise and fluid, with no shots in any driving condition.
Wheels and brakes
The wheels of a city bike, in addition to being almost completely smooth, are very often larger than those of a mountain bike. And if the effect is purely aesthetic point of view, is to recall in this respect the old city bike discussed on itypetravel.com, the purpose underlying such choice is found essentially in practical matters.
Convenience of the cyclist is in fact obtained just guaranteeing always a standing posture of the torso (as opposed to “sport”, bent forward, he is forced to hire who rides a mountain bike): goal achieved by placing the handle generally significantly higher than the saddle and 26 or 28 inch wheels adopting (where mountain bike wheels are generally smaller in order to allow greater impact resistance).
The braking system of a city bike is in only a few cases to disk: in principle a solution is preferred to skate, the so-called V-Brake (or “V-shaped brake”). A rubber (skateboard, to be precise) adheres to a point on the wheel rim when actuated, handlebar, brake command from the transmission cable. Although the mechanism is fairly straightforward, the differences in terms of performance made record by various city bike on the market are huge.
And this not only because better care in the choice of construction materials allows the braking system efficiency as well as improved endurance, but also because some manufacturers have applied to this system some interesting innovations. Certain models have a modulated braking system that prevents the front wheel from locking up suddenly in the event of sudden braking, and therefore the bike from tipping over. A sort of declination in cycling sauce, in hindsight, the principle underlying the ABS used over most of today’s cars.
Spot lights, reflectors and Bell
These three elements of city bikes, lighthouses, reflectors and Bell parts are indicated as mandatory of the highway code, it said earlier. Article 68 of the code and articles 223/4/5 of its implementing Regulation stipulate that “minimum amenities of bicycle”, of course, for a use to which they face on the streets, a brake for each wheel and then “a doorbell, a front light yellow or white light, a red back”.
But that’s not all, the code lists the amount and arrangement of reflectors, which becomes mandatory at night like the lights, and that on each bike must be at least seven: two for each pedal, one for each wheel (to be fixed to the rays) and one rear (red, while others must be yellow). The lighting system can operate instead on battery or using a Dynamo (that is powered by the movement of the pedals: historically most popular solution for each type).
Citizen bike use, purpose for which apparently the city bike was born, the obligation to use reflectors and lights dictated by the code not only responds to over-eagerness by the legislature. Although the bike is in our metropolis a valuable ally of students and workers, representing a means of rapid transportation, eco-friendly, healthy and extremely cheap, it should be borne in mind in its use of a set of rules of prudence.
And make the bike easily visible to motorists, at sunset, of these rules is of course one of the most basic. Which is why, when you purchase a city bike, you should assess which of these elements are already present in each room, as others would nonetheless bought separately. Often, fail, is the second reflector which as seen, must be present on each pedal: many companies limit themselves to mount one.
The bell, the seat, the mirrors
Other safety device, among those listed in the preceding paragraph, to the costs of cutting costs in production by companies is almost always the Bell. “Series”, in practice only on a few models, pace of his obligation laid down by the highway code. It is therefore necessary to establish in the vast majority of cases a part of a bell, but you can do about a virtue of necessity: in choosing the doorbell to mount on your bike you can choose a template from the sound. It should be remembered that the purpose of the accessory is to be heard in the street especially motorists, in vehicles.
The seat more comfortable seat, as told to a mountain bike, it can be a quick release. In short to adjust the seat height is not necessary any tool: a lever at the back allows you to unlock and lock the seat without having to unscrew any bolt. A solution that makes it easier to raise or lower the seat, especially when using the bike are more people of different stature. A similar principle is also applied to the wheels, which also can be a quick release or not.
Quick release wheels, it does not require any tools, simplifies the task to those who for example has to disassemble the bike for storage in the trunk of my car. The counter is represented though by the fact that, in this way, it facilitates the task of the potential thief.Indispensable, so when you leave unattended a bike with wheels of this type, ensure the chain wheel but not at the loom. Another element to the city bikes are almost never fitted as standard, but that also boasts its undoubted usefulness in city traffic are the mirrors. Attention, in this case, is stored to avoid falls, given the extreme fragility of the bike side accessory.
